Morality? Decency? What? I actually think for one of the few occasions in my life, I may actually write a letter to a magazine in response to something they have written about. I won't really share my full opinion here, except to say that I'm not an idiot, nor am I naieve. I know that bad things happen that people don't want to talk about. However, I feel the person who sent in this letter shouldn't even own snakes, let alone be breeding them. I was even more apalled that Reptiles Magazine actually printed the request, though I was very happy at Bill Love's response. I realize that this letter does not neccessarily imply that HE has done such a thing, but he writes about it with such casualty and offhandedness it seems like its a fairly normal and everyday thing and concept from the tone of his letter. Thoughts? For those of you that want to read the entire thing, It's in the September 2008 issue of Reptiles, on page 14. Here is what Mr. Rodrigues of NM writes: "Keeping Secrets Without Killing?" "..I have a unique dilemma. My breeding plans for this year will result in many heterozygous specimens of milk snakes that look normal. I have some cutting edge new morphs that I don't want to let there genes out too soon to people who may use them to recreate my projects faster than normal. I also don't want to put the extra normal snakes in the freezer. Do you have any advice on what to do with normal-looking milk snake babies with hidden genes?" My other thought: snakes = animals, just like any other pet or animal. they aren't laboratory specimens (for the most part). end rant :( Current Mood: bitchyCurrent Music: Queen - Killer Queen |

RUSH! Post-concertal enthusiastic ravings of a deranged fan Welcome to my post-concertal enthusiastic ravings of a deranged fan (the bulk of which was written after I had returned home at 4:30 am – thus being nearly incomprehensible, I have decided to hang back on the editing so as to maintain the purest spirit of the moment). This is the story of a well-mannered average red headed girl in her twenties who, unassumingly, wandered into a Rush concert one day only to have her life changed forever when, during the playing of YYZ, she was bombarded by such powerful cosmic rays of awesomeness – that her life was changed forever --! When next she awoke, she found herself to be...! Thinking...! Maybe I should do something with –my- life.” Thus! Was born: ( A blog. )I assure you I could continue expound, at length, upon the virtues of the three but, instead, I shall sum up my emotions by expressing the highest compliment I could possibly pay to a band: No one. Should die. Without having seen – a Rush concert. Current Mood: geeky |

Another milksnake question! Me again. =) So, I've been doing a lot of reading up on milksnakes (pueblans in particular) and almost everything points to babies being mouthy and flighty. Bowie (my baby) is 15" long, so I'm guessing he's 6 to 9 months, and has never so much as snapped at me. He'll rattle his tail at strangers for a second or two when they move their hand into his tank, but is otherwise very chill. He spends a lot of time burrowing into (and sleeping in) my pockets, and is more than happy to use me as a jungle gym. Is it normal for him to be this tame with me? That's another thing - he's not big on strangers. It's nothing major, just that when I introduce him to other people, he'll get maybe an inch or two onto their hands before pulling a 180 and wrapping himself around my fingers. He also actively seeks me out when I'm too far away, or after spending a little time on a new person. I didn't know that snakes had that kind of recognition capacity! It's nice that he comes to me, but does that mean that he's not (and I hate to use the term) well-adjusted? I'm pretty skeptical about worrying since he is a baby, but I'm wondering if I should make it a point to bring him out to meet more people. And, since I've been posting a lot about him, some ( pictures! )Those show just how tiny he really is. -Haz EDIT: A friend of mine uses the dog tag engraver machines to make a tagging system for all of her reptiles. They read: NAME SPECIES DISTINGUISHING PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS and are taped to the side of the tanks. How cool is that? When I visit, it's nice to have a reference. |

Respiratory Infection One of my BPs has had a respiratory infection for a little over a month. I have been taking him to the vet twice a week and they give him antibiotics shots. He does not seem to be improving much--he still wheezes a lot, has bubbles coming out of his mouth...when I picked him up last night he was covered in drool. I am vigilant about checking his temps and humidity every day, cleaning and disinfecting his cage/hides/water dish as often as possible. He shed last week in one complete shed, no flakiness, so I took that as a good sign that the humidity is in the right range. I am worried that the antibiotics just aren't working for him. He used to be a very opportunistic eater, immediately going for the thawed mice I offered. Now, though, he hasn't eaten in 4 weeks and acts completely uninterested in anything I offer. I am sure his lack of appetite has to do with his infection, but trying to feed him has become extremely frustrating... I've tried a few different methods and nothing seems to work. The vet assures me that sometimes it takes a while before the RI symptoms subside, and that lack of appetite is common, but sometimes she acts concerned that he isn't eating...I'm getting mixed messages from the vet. I have seen little to no improvement in my BP and I don't know how long I can afford to keep taking him for the twice a week injections. Does anyone have suggestions as to how to deal with this RI? Help a Sanctuary at no cost! Message from Pardus who volunteers and takes care of plenty of the animals at Safaris Sanctuary: "just wanted to ask everyone who uses a search site to use www.goodsearch.com. You can type in safaris in the box asking who you are searching for and we get 1 penny for every search....and it cost you NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Last year we raised 184.00 but this year I would like to exceed that. Every penny counts as our costs to continue increases. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!! Pardus" Could any of you do this? It only takes a few seconds to do. They really could use the funds to help feed their critters. Oh, and feel free to share! I know some of you have been to Safaris and seen what a great job they are doing rescuing the wild ones. Thanks :) |

Having Problems With Multiple Herps- HELP??? I posted here once before, asking for help with a sick leopard gecko. Megatron, as I've named him, is doing much better and I've taken him home from the pet store to take care of myself. Now I need help with a couple of animals that have been donated to us. Again, I cannot take them to the vet as I'm working for a pet store. Well, I can't take them to the vet under the store. If they're in dire need of vet care, I will probably end up taking them to the vet myself. ( DESCRIPTIONS UNDER CUT; sick Red Eared Slider and Limpopo Flat Lizard ) |

RIP my good friend I woke up friday to my 2 year old ball python Edgar dead in his hide box. He was blind so I had to put the food in his mouth for him and so on and so forth for the past month he hadn't been digesting his food. We got him a bigger heat pad, a 100wt ceramic heat bulb to increase the warm side of his tank and still no poo. The vet said to continue feeding him he should poo soon after 4 mice dissapearing and not reappearing I stoped feeding him. I got him more plants vines and logs so he can excersise a bit thinking it would help but my dumb butt forgot he couldn't see and he diddn't like to move so the accesories did nothing for him. I skipped two weekends of feeding him and still nothing he had anouther vet appointment monday (today) but he had already passed on friday. When i had found him he was bleeding all out of his mouth and it just looked like he might have seized to death can anyone tell me what could have been wrong with my baby? Not even the vet could tell me even after a necrotopsy. I'm really looking for comfort right now i've had him sense he was born. He was my little baby and I just want to know what could have been wrong with him. ~RIP Edgar~ |

My baby leo has been eating 5-6 small crickets a day, and when I went to get him some yesterday they were out and wouldnt be getting any more until tuesday, so I got him some meal worms. Normally he wont even eat them, but I suppose he was hungry because he ate 5 good sized meal worms right off the bat. I am wondering about how many a day he should be eating? |

UV, travel, and filters Hello, hello fellow herpers! I have a few general questions about my red-eared slider, Heidi. This is my first time posting here (although I have been watching this community for quite some time already!), but it seems as though many of you may be able to give me good advice about this! Ok, so firstly, a few days ago, my UV bulb began flickering. Every time I try turning it on, it will flicker continuously, or just stay off for minutes. I've had this bulb for about 6 months already, so I'm guessing that it's probably no good anymore anyway (since 6 months is generally the lifespan of these lights). I've had my turtle for over a year already, and this is the second bulb that I have gone through. I have been using the ESU Reptile Daylight bulb and fixture. When I bought this one, I found it to be more economical for my money just to buy a brand new fixture all together after my first bulb burned out because the UV bulbs alone were $25 at the pet store (versus the $20 I paid for the bulb + fixture). I was wondering if you guys had any advice for any other bulbs/fixtures that might give me more of a run for my money? I heard that ZooMed's PowerSun UV is good and I even heard from someone that a bulb is generally good for 2 years. Do you guys agree with this, or do you have any other suggestions?
Secondly, I'm planning to take Heidi on a 3 hour roadtrip in about a month. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to transport her in my car safely? I've read that it's no good to transport turtles long distances in water, but as it's a long drive in the middle of summertime, I'm worried about her lack of drinking access. Do you think it's better to transport her in water, or should I just make rest stops once in a while to let her drink?
Finally, for the past year, I have been relying on water changes every 2 days (yes, I am a crazy, yet dedicated owner), but I've finally decided that it might be best for me just to get a filter. I know that there are so many brands out there, but I know that there are probably horror stories that go along with some of them. Do you have any recommendations for some good ones? My turtle is currently in a 10-gal (but her carapace length is only 2", and hasn't changed much at all throughout the year), but I'd like to get a slightly larger filter so I don't have to invest in a new one when I move her to a bigger tank.
Any advice that you have would be highly appreciated! Thanks so much, and as part of introductions, here's a photo of my baby! ^_^ |

Constructive Criticism i've probably discussed this here already, but lets do it again :0
please briefly describe your definiton of what Constructive Criticism is!
i'd appreciate it... and its not just for me, this is for everyone. i've had this ongoing discussion with someone on DevArt about C&C and it was getting increasingly frustrating, then i realized that the reason for that was because we were talking about two totally different perspectives of what C&C is.
so now i'm very curious... what do you think? i'll give my opinion after hearing from a few people |

<3 Papito Papito is enjoying his clean millet seed. He always acts so thrilled when we clean his enclosure and refill it with new millet seed. At the feed store where I buy his millet seed from they raised their price to $18 for a 50 lb bag of millet. It use to be $13! BOO! Current Mood: bouncy |

i have to rehome two herps :-( i'm sad to say that due to some circumstances that i can't fight any longer, i'm going to have to rehome my leopard gecko and my ball python. my vet is stahl exotics in vienna, va: seavs.com. the housing setup can go with the animals if wanted/needed. details and pics behind the cut at the end of this post. i live in annapolis, md, and would be willing to do some driving to get my herps into good homes. if you think you might be too far away but are able and willing to provide a good home, contact me anyway. if it's drivable at all, i'll probably do it. i'm really sad to be doing this, and i just want to know they're going to a good home. this is the first time i'm feeling out this rehoming thing. i don't know how hard it's going to be to find good places for them. any tips? to contact me, please reply here or use barroomeyes at yahoo dot com.
